A 3D printed part can be surprisingly strong, or it can snap the first time you tighten a screw. The difference usually comes down to a handful of choices: material, print orientation, wall thickness, infill and a few design details. This guide explains what actually makes printed parts stronger, starting with the changes that matter most.

1. Choose the right material first
No setting can make a brittle material tough. Match the material to the job:
| Need | Good choices |
|---|---|
| Stiff, low-cost prototypes | PLA |
| Tough parts that bend before breaking | PETG, nylon (PA12) |
| Heat resistance and outdoor use | ASA, ABS, polycarbonate (PC) |
| High stiffness at low weight | Carbon-fibre-filled nylon or PETG |
| Snap fits, clips and living hinges | Nylon PA12 (SLS or MJF), PP |
| Rubber-like parts | TPU |

2. Get the print orientation right (FDM)
FDM parts are made of stacked layers, and the bond between layers is their weakest point. A part pulled or bent across its layers can be much weaker, often around half as strong, as the same part loaded along its layers.
- Orient the part so the main load runs along the layers.
- Print hooks, brackets and clips lying down rather than standing up.
- If a part is loaded in several directions, consider SLS or MJF, which are much closer to equally strong in every direction.
3. Thicker walls beat more infill
Most of a printed part’s strength comes from its outer walls (perimeters) and top and bottom layers, not from the infill inside. Adding walls is usually the cheapest way to gain strength.
- Walls: 3–4 perimeters (about 1.2–1.6 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle) for functional parts.
- Infill: about 20% is enough for display parts; 40–60% for functional parts; 100% only for small, highly loaded parts.
- Infill pattern: gyroid and cubic patterns spread loads evenly in all directions.

4. Design out stress points
- Round inside corners. A sharp inside corner concentrates stress and starts cracks. Add a fillet of at least 1–2 mm.
- Use ribs instead of thickness. A thin wall with ribs is stiffer and warps less than a thick solid block.
- Avoid sudden thickness changes. Taper from thick to thin sections.
- Thicken around holes. Leave at least one hole diameter of material between a hole and the edge of the part.
5. Use inserts and hardware for screws
Screws driven straight into plastic strip easily. Heat-set brass inserts, captured nuts or through-bolts give strong, reusable connections. Use washers to spread clamping force so the plastic does not crush.
6. Consider the process, not just the settings
If a part keeps failing in FDM, changing the process can solve it outright. SLS and MJF nylon parts are tough, nearly equally strong in all directions, and handle snap fits and repeated flexing well. They often cost a little more per part but can remove the need for redesigns and reprints.
7. Post-processing can add strength
Some materials gain strength and heat resistance after printing. Annealing (gentle oven heating) can make PLA and some nylons stronger and more heat resistant, but parts may shrink or warp slightly, so plan for it. Coatings and infiltration can seal and toughen surfaces.
Quick checklist for a strong part
- Material suits the load, temperature and environment.
- Main load runs along the layers (FDM), or the part uses SLS or MJF.
- 3–4 walls and 40–60% infill for functional parts.
- Inside corners are filleted and holes have enough material around them.
- Screws go into inserts, not bare plastic.
